A friend of mine who's uncle works in kashrus told me that a few years ago there might have been something wrong with apples because there is wax on the apple to make it look shiny. It was related that the wax might have had something to do with bugs, my friend said ants. In the end they found that there was not a problem. Who knows. When the matter was being looked into they would only eat apples if they peeled it.
